what causes a sticky smelly black discharge from a dogs ear

My basset hound has a black sticky discharge coming out of his ear but doesnt act like it bothers him

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy),

This is usually a Mallezia (fungal) infection of the ear. Your vet can give you some ear medication to resolve the problem. It is wise to treat this condition because it is bothersum to your pet even if he doesn't show signs and it will not usually clear up on its own. This could turn into a more serious infection if left untreated.
