Dog Allergies

Can we give our 5-year-old Chihuahua with allergies Children's benadryl? We have noticed that he is having these problems due to his ear. He is now scratching not just his ear but his body, front and back paws, stomach, face. if not what could we possibly give him that wouldn't harm him in anyway.
