Why isn't my dog eating or drinking?
Sent to Dog Experts April 03 08:05 AM

My dog ate part of a cow rib yesterday. She has stopped eating and drinking and throws-up a foamy substance about once every two hours. She's pretty much stayed in her bed, but I did take her on a walk just now and she showed no signs of slowing down. If her spirits continue to be high, how long should I wait before taking her to the vet?

My fear would be that there could be a blockage of the GI tract in your girl from a piece of the rib bone. I would at the very least, make sure she stays hydrated. You can give her plain pedialyte via dropper if she will not willingly drink it. If she is having diarrhea along with the vomiting, I would call the vet immediately. If the symptoms that you are seeing continue over the next few hours, I would have her seen, as dehydration can make the problem worse.

The problem with bones is that they splinter...even the ones you buy at your local pet stores. They can cause blockages or damage the GI tract while going through the digestion process. You might want to consider treats like Bully Sticks or filled Kong toys in the future :) Good luck with your girl and I hope she feels better soon :)
