16 yr old dog what to do to make her comfortable

Sent to Dog Experts August 30 04:05 AM

MY DOG, "DANNI" A FEMALE IS 16 AND A HALF YRS OLD. SHE HAS SEVERAL FATTY LUMPS UNDER HER STOMACH.AND 1 ON THE BACK OF HER NECK.SHE ALSO HAS ONE THE SIZE OF A GOLFBALL BEHIDE HER RIGHT REAR LEG. IT DOESN'T SEEM TO BOTHER HER.MY VET SAID DUE TO HER AGE WE SHOULD LEAVE IT ALONE. SHE SAID "DANNI" PROBABLY WOULD TAKE A LONG TIME TO HEAL IF SURGICALLY REMOVED. SHE SAID JUST TO KEEP HER COMFORTABLE AND "DANNI" WILL LET ME KNOW WHEN SHE IS READY TO MOVE ON TO HER NEXT LIFE. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?

I agree 100% with your vet. If they are fatty lumps they are most likely lipomas which are not harmful. If they are not ruptered and bleeding I would leave them alone at her age. Anesthesia is always a risk with any animal and it increases with a dog that age. If she survived the surgery, your vet is correct, it may take awhile for her to heal. It sounds like she is comfortable and happy at this point. It is sort of like the "if it isn't broken then don't fix it rule". We normally don't even remove fatty tumors on young dogs unless the owner insists- it is just for cosmetic reasons. Even if these were "bad" tumors, at her age we would have to really contemplate it. If this was helpful please remember to accept it.
