Canine paw chewing and licking

Sent to Dog Experts April 15 10:56 AM

hello.
i have a 4 yr old toy poodle who regularly licks her right front paw, sometimes I even find her chewing it. i have taken her to the vet and the vet said that it may be a food allergy...she gave me eukanuba food to try. the dog wasn't able to have any treats, just this food. she also gave me Prednisone, which really helped. problem is my dog didn't like the eukanuba food...so i switched back to the regular food.
is it safe to continue to give a dog the prednisone or should we try the eukanuba food again?
help

Reply to Valarie Matthews's Post: She does it when I am around...I'm sure she does it when I am not here too. another thing is that she constantly licks the couch and people...she is a licker...there are no sores on her paws

It sounds like a food allergy and the pred might be a bit strong for her to keep using long term.
If she won't eat the Eukanuba food try adding it slowly to her other food. Just a little more each day until she is eating only the Eukanuba.
Or you can see if she likes another low allergen food such as California Natural Lamb, Blue Buffalo, Wellness or Eagle fish, rabbit, duck, or venison formulas etc.
The licking and the paw chewing can all be signs of food allergies. With the other formulas they make treats too or you could feed her the Eukanuba if she will begin eating it and then use one of the other food as small treats for her.
Hope this helps you!
