My giant schnauzer recently came up ill. First diarrhea, vomitted once, took her to the vet, long story short. I am now infusing 1500ml D5NS 3x qd, 1.2ml gent bid, 1.4ml ampicillian bid, and now doxycycline 250mg bid. Tick panel came back negative. Her blood test showed a CPK of 14448!!!!!WBC 19.8, neut. 14652, mono 1584, AST 525 alk phos. 269GGT 40, amalayse 2354. All other lab values were normal. Vet sadi only thing she's ever seen a CPK w/ that high was a dog given arsenic for heartworm tx. Do you have any ideas what else might cause her CPK to be that high? She is lethargis, has muscle weakness(of course), stimulating appetite by fdeeding her anything she'll eat. She's a 4 yr. old female giant schnauzer, 113lbs, up to date on shots, healthy.

Hypothyroidism can sometimes do this.
Vitamin E or selenium deficiency can do this.
Heart disease or a muscle disorder can also do this.

My suggestion is to see a veterinarian specializing in small animal internal medicine.
They tend to see the harder to diagnose cases and are more familiar with symptoms that a general vet seldoms sees in their practice. If your vet cannot refer you to one then you might find one using this site

You might check your yard for any nibbled on mushrooms - mushroom poisoning could be a possibility if you live where they grow.
Hope this helps you!

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: I have already been to the giant schzr. site, and talked w/ a breeder. Her T4 was 1.1, which I understand is the low side or normal, but my question is what are some other reasons for a CPK of 14448? I know this is muscle related, but even humans after an MI don't have CPK's that high.

Toxin impact can do it, low selenium or vitamin E can do it, and if you ran a regular thyroid then you might want to have Michigan State do a full thyroid panel or have Dr Dodds in CA do one as a full panel shows a lot more than the standard one done in local labs. Sometimes the CPK is way off due to thyroid.
A blood panel rerun might be a reasonable thing to do also see if the reading was accurate.
I do think seeing an internal medicine specialist would be a good next move.
Its possible a cancer, a malabsorption issue, a toxin or something else causing muscle wasting is triggering the high CPK.
My suspicion is, if it can be figured out, its not going to be something 'common'.
