My dog had a gastrotomy approximately 16 hours ago to remove an obstruction (gorilla glue ingestion.) Per the vet's orders, she is not to be fed for another eight hours. (No stairs, no jumping and no running. She was given tramadol (50 mg tablets, two were given approx. 5 hours ago. - she weighs 47lbs.) and this was supposed to sedate her and help with the pain. We were also given an Elizabethan collar. Here's the problem:
The dog isn't sleeping. The dog is not even acting tired. And she's licking at her stitches and bleeding. I tried to get the E-collar on her, but she is reacting violently to that and I'm afraid that she's going to injure herself worse while we try to put that on her.
I'm calling her vet first thing in the morning, but to get through tonight - can I give her another tramadol? Barring that, is there anything I can give her to calm her down. I'm trying to be soothing, but her routine is so out of whack right now that she's freaking out.
