Reply to Dr. Chenoa's Post: Hello~
This dog is a rescue dog. He is a yorkshire terrier. We guess his age to be between 15-17 years. I have had him for 2 years 3 months. I have had him fixed and we had a dental done. He does have some teeth still but they are in sad shape. He is blind. He does have a heart murmur. He is prone to ear infections and has allergies. In the past 6 months he has had alot of hair loss and has lost 1 lb. he weighs about 6 lbs. now. I have noticed the fast breathing when he sleeps with me at night. (He sleeps between my arm and body every night) The fast breathing can go on for 20 minutes. He dosent do this rapid breathing all of the time about once a day I have noticed in the past week. If there is any other information I can give you I am waiting here for your answer. I realize its not easy to do this on the internet, thank you for offering insight. Should I try to wake him when he is breathing fast like this?

we just did a full blood panel about 2 months ago and there is nothing "wrong" with him in that capacity. I had a thyroid test done too. ?He has no thyroid problem.

I just saw your other responses, I only had the first because I was writing back when you were writing!
Where he is older, I would still keep heart on the list, even if he is not coughing when he wakes up.
Depending on when the thyroid testing was done, I would also keep that on the list. Basic bloodwork usually gives clues to look more into Cushing's though...I do always say that compared to a human life span, going to the vet every 3-4 months when you're 16 or 17 is like us going to the doctor's once a year when we're 70.
If the tests are truly all normal, and there is nothing wrong with his heart, I would go after the cognitive dysfunction, or plain old dreaming more. If he shows any signs of confusion while awake, or changes in personality, ask your vet if he is okay for the medication for this.
