SPastic Dog when visitors arrive - HELP!! :)

Sent to Dog Experts December 20 02:26 PM

I have an 11 month old Fox Terrier/Poodle Mix. He is trained in terms of sit, stay, come, lie down, etc. My problem is when I get visitors... He jumps (not just ON the person, but about 3-4 ft in the air) and just will not calm down when the visitors come into and remain in the house. It takes him a good 30 mintues before he returns to "normal" and a relaxed state. He does the same when I come into the house, but I can tell him to sit, and pet him and he will listen. But - when visitors come, it is truly embarrassing. I have tried: giving the visitor treats, getting them to tell the dog to sit, then giving the dog a treat, keeping him on a leash so he cannot jump, holding him (in the sit position, holding onto his collar) down asking him to sit letting the visior pet him - none of these tactics have worked. He simply turns into a maniac with visitors, very spastic/uncrontrollable. I have also tried putting him in his cage when people come over, but then he barks and cries. HELP!!! Thank you so much.

Well...you have a fox terrier and thats what they do. The up side is they are a very intelligent dog so you can try and break the habit but it will take time. The best thing to do is ignore ignore ignore...not give treats or pet or scold...just ignore. Turn your back on him until he stops then immediately praise and reward. He's confused that he's jumping and acting a nut and getting treats and attention so he's thinking thats the thing to do. You need to break that habit. It will take time but he'll get it.
Good Luck!
