I have a Yorkie and he was cultured about 18-19 hrs ago because he seems to be resistant to the antibiotics he has been getting for his kennel cough.....Since he came home he hasnt ate and he has been breathing very loudly. He has also been throwing up alll the food i try to feed him. Is this normal? if not could you explain to me what is wrong with him and how i can make it better? THANKS

Kennel cough involves several viruses and only one bacteria, Bordetella bronchiseptica, which the lab probably will not culture because it is difficult to grow. So antibiotics will not "cure" it.

Treatment requires time (about 2 weeks) and a good immune system. We do use an antibiotic called Zithromax in many of these cases to kill the Bordetella. We also use oral steroids to reduce the inflammation in the trachea and bronchi and a drug called Torbutrol to decrease the cough reflex in the brain. Ask your vet about these suggestions.

If he is vomiting, do not feed him for 12 hours to let his stomach rest. If he is vomiting on an empty stomach, he may need an injection to settle his stomach.

I don't know how taking the culture would have caused this. Did they use a bronchoscope to do the culture?

OK, a tracheal wash can cause some problems, but the pneumonia was probably present at the time of the wash. That's why the culture was taken...because the dog has pneumonia.

If they used too much fluid, that can fill the lung. If there is an abscess and it ruptures, that can cause pus to fill the lung. The tube may have irritated the tracheal or bronchial lining. I am not suggesting that the TW did anything.
