It happens though not every time. I would be concerned that the lump might be a possible indication of a reaction to the vaccine. You can see if a dose of plain Benadryl at 1mg per pound of dog (so a 10 pound dog would get about 1/2 a tablet of plain Benadryl or 1 teaspoon of liquid childrens plain Benadryl).
If that helps it shrink then discuss allergies with your vet before you do the next shots.
But it can take up to 6 weeks for these to be reabsorbed if its just a knot from the shot.
You should be about due to go back for the next set of shots so have the vet check it out for you when you do that.
Hope this helps you!

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: this lump happened after her final vaccinations, being spayed and mircochipped. she is now 5 months old and not due back at the vets for a year. should i try the Benadryl more than once? should i rub it? try warm packs?

Are you sure you are not feeling the microchip?
It gets encapsulated right under the skin in the shoulder area.
You might also be feeling an inflamed sebaceous gland.
I'd see if the Benadryl helped at all - if not then I'd not use it again.
I wouldn't rub it or use hot packs until you know what it is.
If its really concerning you then you may want the vet to check it out particularly if its getting bigger.
To track that you can take a bit of string and measure across or around it and mark the length or width with a pen on the string. See if in a day or so the lump is still the same size.

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: it's to big to be the microchip. could you tell me what a sebaceous gland is? what confuses me the most is why it didn't appear untill 10 days after the vaccines. is this normal?

I really would have expected a lump right away. Usually they do not put the vaccines in where they do the microchip - or at least my vet does not he rotates where on the dog the vaccine goes so no one spot gets used a lot.
A sebaceous gland is like an oil gland. They can get clogged. They are found in or near the hair follicles and their normal function is to keep the skin in good condition with oil secretions.
You can see if a hot pack (warm/hot damp cloth) will bring this to a head to open up. Situation would be similar to a pimple. You can also see if some neosporin or triple antibiotic oinment on the spot will help it clear up as it might also be a small infection from the punch of the microchip being inserted. That wouldn't be usual but could happen. I would expect that to be sore though.
