New Shelter Puppy Won't Eat
Sent to Dog Experts October 01 08:18 PM

Help! I just adopted a Chihuahua mix puppy yesterday. She is very affectionate, but she will not eat. I've tried to giver her food they were feeding her at the shelter, and then today tried mixing it with a little wet food. She won't even taste it. Also, she is very lathargic and wants to sleep all the time. Additionally, she threw up once today. Is this all normal and due to the stress of transisiton to her new home, or should I be worried? She's very small - 9lbs. She will drink occasionally and has urinated 3 times, but will has not defecated. Thank you for your advice!

Reply to Dr. Gabby's Post: Hi Dr. Gabby - I think she was spayed less than a week ago (they told me not to bathe her for 7 days), and she received all her shots (DA2PPL, Bordetella, Rabies, DeWormer) on 9/26. The records don't have a date of spay, but she still has an incision that looks like its glued (not stitched). She has not been licking/biting it. Earlier today, she threw up a yellow bile, but then happily continued on our walk.

Okay. I am a shelter vet so I was wondering if she had not had a BM because she was fasted for surgery. She probably came in on 9/26 and that is when she was vaccinated. I bet she was spayed in the past few days. It usually takes 48 hours after the fasting once they start eating again to produce a BM.

She sounds like a very nice dog. She is probably overwhelmed by the whole ordeal and needs a few days to adjust. She may have vomited bile because she had nothing in her stomach. Try chicken baby food warmed in the microwave. Put some in her mouth so she has a taste. If that does not go over try a bite of vanilla ice cream. Now this is not going to be an every day thing. Just while she is adjusting. Leave her dog food down too.

As long as she is acting bright and alert and does not have any vomiting or diarrhea, except once, I would not be worried.

Thanks
Dr. Gabby

Reply to Dr. Gabby's Post: Thanks - but she just threw up again! Only a little bit of yellow bile this time - probably a tablespoon. Should I take her to emergency care or just wait and see (I promise this is my last question, I'm just overanxious because this is only night 2!) Thanks again.
