I think my dog has OCD. When he eats he takes a bite of food, then walks frantically around the perimiter of the room while occassionally licking the wall. The paint is beginning to wear off at his level. He arrives back at his dish, takes another bite, then goes around the room again. He has always gone around the room, but the licking has just developed this year. Why is he doing this? Can we help him stop?

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy),
Does he eat all of his meals this way, or does he just do this occasionally?
Is he losing any weight?
How old is he?
Is he having any problems with vomiting or diarrhea?

He eats all his meals this way. Once in the morning and once at night. Dry food. Not losing any weight. No digestive problems.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

It certainly does sound like your dog has some type of obsessive compulsive behavior disorder. There are medications that can help with this, so you should see your vet as soon as possible to discuss this problem. It is best if you could also videotape your dog doing this behavior for the vet to see. Sometimes it is difficult for a vet to diagnose OCD based on description...but when we can see what the animal is doing, it is often very clear.
I am attaching a client information handout that I use in my practice that discusses OCD in dogs in more detail and how it is treated. I hope that you find it useful.
