Every Spring my dog''s paws get red and inflamed. He licks them - they must itch. Every year the vet gives him a shot for allergies. We have also tried antihistimines.
This year the vet wants to do a biopsy but I think they are infected. They are raw and bleeding.

Hello,

I would agree with you the feet are likely infected, and because this is seasonal related, I don't see a need for a biopsy. When the condition gets this bad uncontrollable by antihistamines and steroid injections, your best bet is to seek a dermatologist referral from your vet so that you could have customizable injections made up for your dog to control these allergies. A biopsy will likely prove no help in this matter.

Instead of antibacterial soap, i would use a betadine (iodine) or chlorhexidine solution mixed 1 part to 10 parts water to soak the feet 5 minutes at a time, 2-3 times a day, and pat dry very gently but thoroughly. Covering with booties may be needed to help prevent additional trauma to the raw areas and an e-collar a must while healing up. Oral antibiotics are also required to help prevent systemic spread of the infection. This is a severe case, but not an uncommon one, and I do think if further action is to be taken in dealing with your dog's allergies, a dermatologist is your best bet to have the best experienced person dealing with this which ends up being much cheaper and faster relief for the dog in the long run.

Good luck, and hope he heals up quick.

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I thought was going on with Buddy. The suggestion to change the soak to betadine is helpful and I will start today.
I will administer the oral antibiotics and seek a dermatologist for him.
I am confident that I can help comfort him now.
This is a huge relief for me as I do not have time to keep taking him in to the vet.
You have saved me so much stress!
