Hi,
I'm assuming you are talking about Dachsunds. As a vet and daschund owner, let me tell you that if you are worried about potty training, these guys can be VERY stubborn. Hiking the leg comes with not neutering at a young age. Neuter at 4 months of age, no leg hiking. The biggest issue for these dogs is their temperment and stubbornness. They were bred to chase badgers - they are persistent. It took me 6 months of diligent potty training to finally housebreak our dachsund.
I would suggest you do some research on the breed. This may not be the right breed fo ryou. As far as I know, unless you are talking about a "double dapple" or white coat, you should not have any increased risk of disease. A double dapple can have eye issues.
Dachsunds are prone to intervertebral disc disease due to their long bodies. Many have to have surgery as they age if they experience this problem. This surgery can be thousands of dollars ($2-3000). I would take out pet insurance if you buy a dachsund.
They are wonderful pets - please don't let me discourage you. I love ours -- I just think you have to understand the breed.
