Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy) -

Puncture wounds can sometimes be very deep and the deeper they are, the more chance of serious infection or possibility of developing an abscess. Sometimes dirt or hair or just about anything else can be pushed very deep into the tissues and not be visible by just looking at the wound. While it is good that it is not bleeding and looks clean, that does not mean that there isn't something more serious going on deeper down, so you are right to be concerned.

If you are looking for something to do at home, about the only thing you can do would be to keep the wounds clean by washing them with warm water twice daily. While it is okay to use an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment on dogs, this often makes them want to lick at it more, so it usually isn't very helpful. If your dog seems to be uncomfortable, you can give aspirin (NOT Tylenol or ibuprofen). We usually dose this at about one regular strength tablet (325 mg) per 40 pounds or so. It would be best to check with your vet before giving this though.

It really sounds like your dog needs to be examined by a vet and probably put on antibiotic to deal with any infection that may be present. The vet will be able to better evaluate how deep the wounds are. If they are very deep, they may recommend sedating your dog and flushing these wounds so they can make sure there is nothing lodged deep within the tissues. They can also dispense some pain medications that will be more effective than the aspirin.
