Hello- my nine year old australian terrier has had two lymphomas

Hello- my nine year old australian terrier has had two lymphomas removed six and two months ago respectively which tested benign. He just had two removed yesterday. My vet suggests removal instead of biopsy, stating that they can turn malignant after initially testing benign. My question is, should these two tumors test benign, and should he develop additional lumps, are we to continue w/ the excisions or would it be ok to leave him be? I hate to keep cutting him up and have spent a lot of money. I also gather that treatment for malignancy does not have a good success rate. Please advise. Thank you, Lisa

Sorry I was offline for a bit.

Lipomas are fatty tumors and some can change and become malignant at which point they are called infiltrative lipomas. Most though are removed because they are disfiguring to the dogs looks or are bothering the dog.

You can read about lipomas here

While you should have any new ones checked by your vet, if the two he has removed check out as not malignant you might consider just doing fine needle aspirate biopsies on any new ones and only remove them if they change or become bothersome.

Hope this helps you!
