Our small terrier dog (12 lbs) just ate a cooked chicken leg bone (minus meat) by accident. What should we do -- she seems fine at this point.

The concern with chicken bones is that the bone will splinter and rupture the intestines or they will cause an intestinal blockage. This is more common in small dogs than in large dogs.

You have two choices:

You can see the vet immediately and have the vet retrieve the bone before it has an opportunity to rupture the intestines or cause a blockage.

Or you can wait and see what comes out - literally. Some dogs will pass chicken bones on their own but a good number cannot. If you see vomiting, lethargy or diarrhea, you should rush to your vet right away.

Let me know if you still have questions.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: The local pet store told us that goats milk will soften the stomach lining and soften the bones is this credible?
