My 7 month old boston terrier is in heat and my 6 month old cocker spaniel got to her once. My vet says my only options are letting her have the puppies or spaying her. If we let her have the puppies will it impact future litters?

If you let her have the puppies, you run the risk of her needing a c-section or vet assisted delivery and you take the risk that she will not be a good mother. It's like giving a 13 year old child a baby and telling them to take care of it. They are just not ready. Same goes for dogs.

If you decide to let her carry the pups, you need to be sure and see the vet around day 55 for an x-ray to determine whether or not she will be able to deliver them naturally or not.

Let me know if you still have questions.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: I was told if we get the abortion shot that can cause health problems also. We wanted to have 1 litter out of her in the future and though we agree she is too young now we really don't want to spay her if we don't have too. But if she has the puppies, is a future litter affected by this pregnancy?

Yes. Abortion shots are not safe. They can cause infection and pyometra and can make a spay the only way to fix the problem.

This first litter should not affect future litters, unless there are complications and SHE dies or cannot deliver.

Remember how important it is to see the vet on day 55 for an x-ray.

Thank you, I definitely don't want to risk my dog. I will confer with my vet on whether she thinks it will be safe for her to have them.
