(Not a Dog Question?)

skin cancer in dogs

We are considering the adoption of a 6 - 9mo old male albino bull terrier mix from the humane society. His nose is mostly pink and seems vulnerable to the sun. Since we live in Hawaii, I'm concerned about skin cancer. Is this a serious concern? What precautions can be taken? Is there sunscreen for dog noses? Maybe we should wait for another breed? Thanks for any guidance you can give us.

Skin cancer IS a concern, particularly with lightly colored dogs. But you can use sunscreen on these dogs and, as long as you are diligent about applying it, it is effective. You will want to use a waterproof variety like waterbabies. Then reapply as necessary.

You can also use a moisturizer on the nose called "Bag balm." You can get it at your local pharmacy. It's made for people. It works wonders for dry and cracked noses, which is common with this breed.

So, if you're in for a little extra work, this dog should not pose a problem.

Let me know if you want to discuss this more.
