Safe Air Travel with My Small Dog

Sent to Dog Experts October 24 2006 at 4:01 AM

I have a yorkshire terrier and would like to take her on a flight from new york to poland, where she would be in a carrier in the cabin. Is this too stressful for a small dog? Do dogs get jet lag? What can I do to make the trip easier for her?

Optional Information:
Age: 2; Female; Breed: Yorkshire terrier

Already Tried:
I haven't tried anything yet, since I haven't travelled yet.

Being in cabin is a much better way for her to travel.
Make sure she is comfortable and accustomed to her carrier before you go. If she feels safe in the carrier that will reduce her stress.
Dogs do get confused about time changes but as they tend to sleep most of the flight that helps them orient to the new time zone.
As you are taking a pet to another country, you may wish to contact that country's consulate or embassy for information. A listing of consulates can be found here

You may need to obtain a pet passport to allow your dog to travel into Europe.

Microchip, rabies shot, and worming info are part of what is needed for that.
What I do to make travel easier is the last three meals before flying I feed a bland diet of chicken meat mixed with rice to have limited residue so that the dog won't have as urgent a need to go. I also exercise the dog really well the day before so it will still be tired for the trip. And I line the carrier with a bed liner pad for incontinence so that if the dog has to go there won't be as much mess.
Hope this helps you!

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: I have been told that animals do not get jet lag, so I am a bit confused about that. What about natural sedatives? I have already checked all travel requirements, etc so the question is really just whether it is too stressful for her or if it is a manageable/reasonable thing to put her through?
